Are Advanced Train Tickets valid if I miss the specified train because an earlier train is delayed?

Do you have to buy advanced train tickets? Bit Confused!?

  • i was reading somewhere today about advanced tickets being priced three times higher than normal! but do you need advanced tickets? im travelling from crawley to ...show more

  • Answer:

basically Advance tickets are tickets which as the name suggests can be bought in advance sometimes up to 2 months ahead, there are certain levels usually say 1 is the cheapest could be just £10 for a single one way fare up to level 5 which is slightly cheaper than a walk up fare (the ticket you buy on the day), Advance Purchase must be booked a minimum of 24 hours in Advance and are only valid on the nominated train companies only (i,e Grand Central, National Express, Midland Mainline) and on a certain booked train, if you do not make it for your booked train you can be charged the maximum single fare for your journey so always bare this in mind when you book. You can still buy your ticket at the station on the day and get discount with your 16-25 card these are called "walk up tickets" why not have a look at your journey, the date your travelling and compare the two tickets and see which is cheaper don't forget your 16-25 card gets you 1/3 or 34% the ticket price. below is a useful link in comparing prices So hopefully that's not too confusing or boring for you http://www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com/

You don't have to buy advanced tickets. Every possible journey has a "walk on" fare, where you can buy the ticket immediately before travelling - and then you're not limited to travelling on a certain train like you are with an advanced ticket. Incidentally, if you do buy a ticket in advance, it's not necessarily an "advance" ticket. They're only available on longer routes and even then there's a only a certain number available, so you might end up getting a "walk on" ticket anyway.

You can still buy your ticket on the day and you will get it 25% cheaper anyway because you have a YP railcard, advance tickets only really work out cheaper if bought 2 wks or more in advance.

no you can still turn up at the station and buy

AC

You can buy before travel, albeit at a (probably) higher cost, but most companies (Bar Grand Central) fine you if you get on a train without a ticket, you can't buy no board anymore There is also an option on the National Rail website for open return (which is any service returnign within 30 days)

no buying advance normally means you get it cheaper, but that is really way back like a month or two ago, i think with the young persons railcard you will get yours cheaper anyway so it shouldnt matter for cheaper trains try virgin, trainline.com google these as i have no idea of correct names for sites
