What does a train driver do if he runs past the platform, is it illegal to reverse?

  • Answer:

Here in the USA you can't just back up.If your in CTC(centralized traffic control)you need permission from a dispatcher to make a reverse move.In an interlocking you need permission from a control operator. If you get caught making a reverse move without authority they will discipline you.I would say it's a rare event for a passenger train to miss the platform unless the engineer is really taking a mental vacation.A passenger train can stop pretty quick unlike a freight train.

Depends on the railroad. With the light rail in Portland Oregon the driver would have to walk to the other end of the train to drive forward using that cab. With a freight railroad I have seen trains just go backwards. In fact, just two nights ago I saw a one car freight train (for real!) going backwards through downtown Salem Oregon.

A train will sometimes have to back up if they miss the station. I recently was on a train in Northern Ontario, Canada, where the engineer forgot to stop at a very little station, where only one person was getting off. After the woman told staff, they radioed the locomotive, and had the train stop and back up to the platform again. On the other hand, just today on my way home from work, the guy driving my commuter train stopped just after the station platform, and all the passengers had to jump out of the train and walk along beside the track to get back to the platform!

No he can't reverse. He must go all the way around the whole loop. Sometimes the waiting passengers might have to wait a couple weeks for the train to make it back to the station.
