Rome and Juliet crap? Not all theater is Shakespeare, there are modern shows. If you already think you're too good for theater "crap" you are in for a rude awakening when you try to be an actor. Yes, people usually start out in theater. You learn the basics of acting, and while film acting is more subtle they aren't completely different. It also shows dedication and consistency, that you can do a scene well the first time, and that you actually want to act, and aren't just acting on a whim. Theater is a way to get experience and prove to agents you can book jobs. From this question you don't seem like you could be an actor. You already think you're too good for the theater roles, and until you become successful you don't choose roles, you take any opportunity you can get. If you only play characters you can relate to you'll only be playing one type of character... not a good career. You need to do real research. you can't just ask a question on Yahoo answers and expect to be told everything you need to know about acting.

if you just want to act, your time could be better spent than trying to get a degree in theater. there are other things you can do instead of waiting on a 2 or 4 year degree to start doing anything. a degree looks good on paper, but it won't guarantee you any acting work or success. if you have talent and ability your age shouldn't matter. you just go on auditions that are relative to your age and character. it will be very difficult to per sue acting, get a college degree and have a regular job to support yourself at the same time. ohio is probably not the best place to try and per sue acting from. you need to be where there are opportunities for training and experience. take acting classes, when you know how to audition for things, try community theater and student films for experience. if you just want film acting you don't have to do any theater if you don't want to. it's just good experience and is easier to come by than film acting things. if your in a large city, you should be able to find several community theaters. acting is acting, if you can do one, you can do the other, there's some minor differences.

Well, You're never too old to start acting. NEVER. Don't even blink when it comes to those child stars. YES, they have success, but they may have missed out on stuff too, you know, rites of passage. Besides, in this day and age, disney and nick have really lost their edge. I remember when stuff used to be GOOD. GREAT. Where's the inspiration? It now appeals to kids 12 and younger, maybe not even that old. Point is, sometimes it's harder for teenagers now to get jobs because, since they didn't start at a younger age, they're currently in school, and some directors are skeptical about that. Which is why most actors who plays teens on tv (ex. 90210, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill) are really in their mid to late 20's. That's considered young. No school baggage, nothing else to really focus on. If you've never had experience, I'd suggest minoring, not majoring. Yes, there could be potential useful info, but you don't want to get ahead of yourself, and end up getting smacked in the face with a ton of bricks. Acting is about creating a role, becoming connected, finding yourself and the character, and portraying them to impact somebody, anybody. Yes, it's fun. It's hard work. But it's worth it. Go ahead, get started. You can always take classes on the side. Put together your resume, audition once or twice a month, be prepared for rejection, but be optimistic about success. Also, don't get stage theatre twisted-many great actors did stage before film. DO NOT shut it out-You will regret it and look like an idiot. That's what I did. You must have a little experience with a couple of stage shows, that's where most actors and actresses start. There's even jobs that pay. You'll be surprised at what you can learn there that will follow and help you in film. Join community plays, or city. Find SOMETHING. The economy's not dead, yet. There's something out there. 10 is a baby. 20 is a baby. 30 is a baby. ITS NOT OLD. Don't get it twisted. 40, 50 is not old. It's not the new 20, but why would you want it to be? It's still young, when you compare your age to that of a 90 year old, say you're old. A 60 year old-that's 30 YEARS! It's NEVER too late-get started now, if it's not for you, at least you tried-and aren't stuck with an intense major course. Trust me on this one-even though you don't know me-START. You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. :) (sorry this was sooo long)
