What does the "latent" mean in LSI?

What do you mean by “Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LA DA)?

  • This subgroup is referred to as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). LADA is a slow, progressive form of diabetes.

  • Answer:

Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) is a genetically-linked, hereditary autoimmune disorder that results in the body mistaking the pancreas as foreign and responding by attacking and destroying the insulin-producing beta islet cells of the pancreas. Simply stated, autoimmune disorders, including LADA, are an "allergy to self." In its early stages LADA typically presents as type 2 diabetes and is often misdiagnosed as such. However, LADA more closely resembles type 1 diabetes and shares common physiological characteristics of type 1 for metabolic dysfunction, genetics, and autoimmune features. However, LADA does not affect children and is classified distinctly as being separate from juvenile diabetes. At present, the American Diabetes Association does not recommend general screening of the population for type 1 diabetes, though screening of high risk individuals, such as those with a first degree relative (sibling or parent) with type 1 diabetes should be encouraged. Type 1 diabetes tends to occur in young, lean individuals, usually before 30 years of age, however, older patients do present with this form of diabetes on occasion. This subgroup is referred to as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). LADA is a slow, progressive form of type 1 diabetes. Of all the patients with diabetes, only approximately 10% of the patients have type 1 diabetes and the remaining 90% have type 2 diabetes.

Hi. I have LADA. I am 48 yrs old. I am 5'8". I weigh 160lbs. In May 07 I got very weak and thirsty. I went to the hospital and was in diabetic ketoacidosis. I was in intensive care for 5 days. I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic and was put on 1 shot of lantus a day. I could never get my a1c's under 9. In Feb of this year 09 I caught the flu even after a flu shot. After 4 days again I went into ketoacidosis. I almost died this time in intensive care unit. I survived and went to a endocrinologist. I was now diagnosed with LADA. I am now being treated as type 1. I shot of Lantus a day and novolog at meal times. I am so glad I went to an Endo doctor because I was sick all the time. Now I bgl levels are where they are suppose to be and I am not sick all the time. As a matter of fact I feel normal again. a1c's 7 to 7.5. Good luck.
