  • Answer:

No they are not. Hypothyroidism is when your thyroid is functioning below normal levels. They supplement with either T3 or T4 or a combination of both. Those are forms of thyroid hormones. Hyperthyroidism is where your thyroid is overactive. They generally try to determine the cause or reason your thyroid is overactive. It could be multiple things. The medicine they give you for hyperthyroidism is based on what the problem is. Typically it's what's called "antithyroid" medication. It does the reverse. Sometimes hyperthyroidism simply from being pregnant. Usually in that case, drugs such as propylthiouracil and methimazole are given. Occasionally they do radiation or give you radioactive iodine to destroy the thyroid gland when it's severe because hyperthyroidism can cause a lot of serious problems. So, no, they are not the same. In fact, they are typically exactly opposite.

They are treated differently because they have an opposite affect on the body. Hyper increases metabolism, Hypo decreases metabolism. The thyroid produces the thyroid hormone, an important hormone that stimulates the metabolism of the body. Hypothyroidism is when whatever condition causes the thyroid hormone production is below normal. So the persons metabolism reduces and feels sluggish, gains weight gets cold easily, is sleepy too much. So the persons get medication to replace the hormones of the thyroid. And they have to take this medication for life. Hyperthyrodism is when whatever condition causes the thyroid hormon to be over produced. The symptoms usually are related to an increase in the metabolic rate of the body. So the person has increase heartrate, sweats excessively, can stand heat, is nervous and agitated. The medication treats the symptoms not the hormones. So the person will get mediction to reduce his heart rate, not reduce his hormones.Radioactive iodine may be given. Surgery may be performed.

Based on the 2 links, the treatments are different. Hyper = Two common drugs in this category are methimazole and propylthiouracil (PTU) both of which actually interfere with the thyroid gland's ability to make its hormones. Hypo = The easiest and most effective treatment is simply taking a thyroid hormone pill (Levothyroxine) once a day, preferably in the morning.
