Higher Education: What are the pros and cons for obtaining a Masters degree in 2013?

  • I am 26 years old and I am interested in obtaining a Masters Degree in Public Health. I am interested because I have some faith in higher education and want to get to a certain level in my career. However, I am still in debt from my undergrad days, and I do not want to be in debt for the next 20+ years. Can someone help lay out the pros and cons? Thanks!

  • Answer:

this is the exact question i had been wondering myself for the last 2 years. i am a working professional with only nights and weekends to spare (even nights are a question mark).. i do not have any undergrad debt - but still, master degree is not cheap.. i was looking into online schools and regular colleges in the area - and came up with $40k+ estimates.. with the job market being what it is now and no guarantee that this $40k will be the annual increase i can expect once degree is obtained - this whole thing looks like a gamble.. and i don't gamble.. once i am more established or if indeed there is this essential job requirement to have master's - yes, i will definitely consider it.. it would have to wait until then.

I have three times entered evening-class masters programs while working full time.  I completed courses each time and enjoyed the learning experience and meeting new people, but I never got the degree.  I know that this is much less common today, but my employers (different ones in each case) had tuition assistance programs, and they were paying 80-100 percent of the total cost. I wouldn't have entered any of those programs, if I had to pay for or finance the entire cost on my own.  It wasn't worth it to me or to my future earning potential. The only reason I dropped out all three times was the demand for short-notice, extended-duration work assignments in other cities.  I had to choose between work and school.  Something to think about - even if your employer will pay, that doesn't mean that you won't get sent to another continent for work on a couple of days' notice.
