What are some FaceBook 'like' sites?

Why do sites like The Real Singapore thrive (100k Facebook likes) as opposed to other sites like Breakfast Network and The Independent Singapore (7k and 4.5k Facebook likes)? What does this say about the Singaporean reader?

It shows that TRS is 49th in Singapore, TOC is 409th in Singapore and The Independent is 792nd in Singapore. For comparison, Straits Times Online is 29th and Today online is 94th.

    It doesn't say so much about the Singaporean reader than it says about human nature. TRS is an anti-govt, sensationalist site that not only publishes its own content but aggregates related content. I believe the main reason why it has so many readers is because it fills out a niche that our mainstream media can never occupy (due to tight legislation and governmental oversight). Because it is so sensationalist & anti-government, it appeals to 2 types of readers: those who are as zealously anti-government & those who simply wish to know the "other" side of the story (they may or may not buy it).

People read the Straits Times and Today for the government aligned side of the story and The Independent Singapore and TOC for the alternative view where applicable. People read TRS to reinforce their bias and prejudices. It doesn't say as much about the Singaporean reader as it does the nature and inherent draw of tabloid reporting. Articles on avenues such as TRS and STOMP are sensationalist at best, and appeal to the masses in the most base ways.
