What fabrics to use for fabric painting?

When painting clothes you use acrylic or special fabric paints, but what about oil paints? ?

  • can you use oil paints to paint clothes...if you do, what happens? is there anything wrong with it? and why?

  • Answer:

Acrylic paints are a good choice for painting clothes. The paints that they make for fabric paints are really acrylic. Acrylic is plastic, so it is a good choice for something you want to wash.

Usually you use acrylics because you can thin them with water and you don't have to worry about anything volatile coming in contact with the skin. Oil paints use solvents to be thinned, they don't dry quickly and they're stiff when dry. Also the heat of a dryer is going to 'cook' the paint in the cloth - and oil paints don't like heat. I'm guessing you have some oil paints lying around and you want to play and paint some clothes. I would try them out on some old tennis shoes.
