What is the best material for a projector screen?

What type of projector screen is best?

  • Which is best for LCD projector? Which is best for DLP projector?

  • Answer:

Don't go to Best Buy or any other big box store. You will be lucky to find anyone that knows that there are different types of screens. There are 3 basic types of screens. 1. Manual pull down (cheapest and worst) 2. Fixed frame (Medium to high price but best performance) 3. Motorized (Most expensive and typically not as good as a fixed frame) There are also multiple options for frames and screen material within each category. Which is best depends on your room, what you watch (movies, TV, Games, etc.), the type of projector you have, and your budget. My suggestion is to find a local independent A/V retailer in your area and stop in to talk to them. You'll typically find that they are very friendly and knowledgeable and have gear that is way better than the big boxes. If you need help go to www.cedia.org and use their free finder service.

If you want the best color reproduction, then buy a gray matte screen. These tend to be a little more than the tradition white matte screen. If you are serious, then buy the gray. If you are going to buy a cheap projector under $1500, then go with the white. It will probably suit your needs. The type of screen does not vary based on the type of projector you have. The type of screen is dependent on resolution, projector lumens, contrast ratio and image size.
