Need Help selecting home audio/ home theater system/ parts?

    Watch your local Craigslist for local people selling off their older, but name-brand receivers and speakers. There are "White Van" scam setups sold for cheap prices so search the internet for a list of these so you dont get ripped off. Stick with Yamaha, Dennon, Kenwood and Onkyo for receivers. For a budget system you do not need component or HDMI switching and there are a lot of good 5.1 receivers out there going for $100 without these 'bells'. Ideally you would find a set of identical 5 monitor style speakers and a external self-powered sub. Avoid systems where the DVD player is built into a thin receiver. These are glorified DVD player systems and do only 1 thing: play DVD' on the built in player. You often cannot hook anything else up to them.

$500 is going to limit your choices quite a bit and quality will suffer in one or more areas. Something like an Onkyo HT-S5100 wouldn't be too bad. They are going for around $450 new on Ebay. A few more in and around $500 that aren't too bad would be: Harmon Kardon CP-40 Yamaha YHT-780 (very nice) Sony HT-7200DH If you stretched more towards the $1000 mark, the Onkyo HT-S9100THX system is very very nice. THX certified and includes all the latest bells and whistles. It is a kick *** HTIB. If you can come up with the cash for that system you'll be very pleased.
