  • Answer:

With a math degree you should focus some course work on statistical analysis, which is a very hot specialty in the software job market. If you can emphasize on your resume and/or cover letters as having studied & mastered the principals of machine learning, Bayesian modeling, and statistical analysis hiring managers will take note with that alone. If you can add competency in Java (or whatever programming language), you will stand out. Software engineering is a field of specialties. It's rare for a college grad to get hired into a position of general software developer -- those roles are typically for people with years of industry experience. So use your math background as your specialty. If you can gear it toward statistical analysis you will be of interest to nearly every company in Silicon Valley... from Google to Salesforce, to yes, even Yahoo.
