  Deep cycle batteries have few electrodes stacked on top of each other with a low surface contact area. This has the effect of increasing efficiency, as charge is trapped inside and released gradually. A deep cycle battery does not necessarily have the largest capacity/energy density overall, but it is designed to be inherently stable and reliable under a set of various weather conditions. It is designed to have a minimal guaranteed current that it can deliver, despite the low surface contact, unlike other battery types. It can also be charged and discharged more times, reducing the number of maintenance trips. Electrode plates are also very thick (contributes to their weight). Used in telco base stations and radio back-ups. The plates in each cell have a large contact area (due to being many of them), can be partially hollow in certain constructions and the principal reactive concentration (sulphuric acid) can also be slightly higher. This allows for an instantaneous burst as an exothermic reaction that allows a higher amperage, required for the cranking of a vehicle engine. By comparison, such a battery has the lowest of energy densities compared to a deep cycle or standard type, but it's high carrier mobility makes it somewhat more resilient to chemistry changes than other types on the short term. Sealed battery types are more common nowadays for all lead-acid application types. Once vented due to overcharge or overdischarge, the battery will be damaged with no chance of mending.
