While a plethora of myths abound in our world, I'll focus on the ones I know best: myths regarding cancer. My ex-mother-in-law died from lung cancer. A dear friend died from stomach cancer. My teenage daughter lost her fight with lymphoma (blood cancer/cancer of the lymphatic system). A close friend lost his brother and mother to cancer, and another friend lost both her sons to leukemia (blood cancer). I've learned so much about cancer and the myths surrounding it that I am often mistaken for a medical professional.1. "We all have cancer in our bodies." No, we do not. This is a ridiculous assumption often stated by those who have little concept of the benefits of Western medicine and has no basis in reality. It has also been stated as fact by "Dr. Oz," who has been outed as a charlatan several times but for some reason continues to be adored by those who don't know any different. "Everyone has cells that have mutant proteins from DNA damage, but to say that that's cancer would be alarmist," says Jennifer Loros, Ph.D, a professor of biochemistry and genetics at Dartmouth medical school.2. "Sugar feeds cancer, so don't eat sugar." This myth was fueled by misunderstanding and "nutrition Nazis." A study regarding the effects of sugar consumption on cancer made news recently when researchers revealed that one's consumption of sugar has no effect whatsoever on cancerous cells. According to the Mayo Clinic, "Sugar doesn't make cancer grow faster. All cells, including cancer cells, depend on blood sugar (glucose) for energy. But giving more sugar to cancer cells doesn't speed their growth. Likewise, depriving cancer cells of sugar doesn't slow their growth."3. "There's a cure for cancer; Big Pharma/the government/your doctor just doesn't want you to know about it." There are a good many people who seriously believe this. While it would be wonderful to have a cure, here's why this isn't true: a. There are many different types of cancer, and several sub-types within each type as well as sub-sub-types. Thus, there are myriad types of treatment. There are even many different types of chemotherapy. Every cancer patient is an individual and no one treatment will work for everyone who has that same cancer, let alone one treatment that works for all cancer. b. Often those who claim to know that there is "a cure" think that cure is cannabis. While cannabis does have many excellent benefits for cancer patients (appetite stimulant, nausea and pain relief, etc.), and has been shown to be effective against certain types of brain tumors, it is not a cure all and needs a lot more legitimate studies done before we can definitively say that marijuana cures cancer. c. One of the biggest reasons people think there is a cure is because of a certain greed factor exhibited by pharmaceutical companies. Why cure a disease when treating it is so much more profitable, they say.  While this may be true in some cases -- and I cannot say for certain if it is or not -- do you really think if there was "a cure" that pharma corporations wouldn't latch onto it immediately and charge mega-dollars for it? It would be a huge money-maker and they know it.4. "Deodorant causes breast cancer." The National Cancer Institute and other research indicates that there is no conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants with breast or any other cancer. While there may be harmful ingredients such as parabens and aluminum compounds in some deodorant, cancer does not seem to be at issue here. 5. "Microwaving your food causes cancer." Using microwave-safe containers and wraps eliminates any chance of toxic chemicals leeching into your food, and microwaves themselves have been proven safe time and again. "Studies have shown that food cooked in a microwave is just as safe as food cooked using alternative methods. An interesting tidbit – food cooked in a microwave may also retain more vitamins, nutrients and minerals when compared to food that is boiled." (Source: Bel Marra Health, Ontario, Canada)6. "Cancer is caused by guilt/anger/suppressed emotions." This is perhaps one of the most uninformed and outlandish claims ever regarding cancer.  There are many causes of cancer, some of them not yet known. In a nutshell, cancer is generally caused when broken/defective DNA strands are triggered, sometimes by environmental factors, sometimes by an unknown. It can be hereditary but is not always so. It is NOT caused by any emotion, whether negative or suppressed.
