Ouch! Welcome to the club. I guess technically you have trail rash, not road rash, but it's usually just as bad -- maybe not as much bacteria on the trail as on the road. It's too late for my step one, but I'll tell you that anyway for next time: Clean it out thoroughly with soap and water. What I do is go home as soon as possible, put a bullet in my teeth and get in the shower and scrub the wound with plain soap using a fingernail brush. Yes, it hurts like hell at first, but you'll get used to it and it's essential in preventing infection. After this, I keep it clean and try to put an antibiotic cream like Neosporin on it at least twice a day. The store brands (like CVS and Walgreens) are identical to Neosporin and cost a lot less. Unless it's really bad I don't put any bandages on it. In my experience the air exposure aids in healing. Again, welcome to the club. Now you have some "medals" to show for your courage. Ben

you can always go for a soak in the tub with some epsom salt, Its a drawing agent so it'll soften up the exposed skin and help get all the dirt out, let it dry in the open air, this helps create a partial scab, use neosporin, a non stick tefla pad and wrap it with gauze this way if it seeps it does not get on an ace bandage. let it air ouf every few hours and re wrap it with a new tefla pad with some neosporin on it. Don't leave it to doctors to clean it out for you, I fell on some fine stone at a race and had to go to the hospital to look for broken ribs, and when they cleaned me up. they sent me home with gravel still in my elbows

If you can, use something like Tegaderm. It's a bandage that adheres to the skin and stays put for days, keeping the area moist and allowing faster healing. It's available at any big drug store. If it's right on your elbow that may not work. The main thing is to keep the area moist with disinfectants already mentioned.

usually i just try to keep them clean with soap and water and leave them open to the air. i find i heal best if i just let my body do its thing. all those salves and such only seem to slow it down in my experience.
