I have this problem as well. It is where the manifold connects. It is missing a bolt and needs to be put back in, but I can’t find the perfect size bolt and I don’t really care all that much to hunt one down as the sound does not bug me that much. I tightened it with one that did not fit and it worked well as far as eliminating the sound, but it came out because it was too small. Have you been mudding? I noticed that when the whole underside is covered in mud it squeaks less and clicks less as well, but then when it dries after a day or two the sounds are back. I know, "It's not a good idea to leave the mud on there." But its for the sake of a silent ride for a day or two! : ) If you have it under warranty, I would DEFIANTLY take it in. Otherwise, fix it yourself or have a mechanic recommended by a local auto parts store. These have been the best recommendations I have gotten for my Mazda protégé that I would never dream of working on.

It sounds like it is a lifter clicking or possibly an exhaust manifold leak. Neither of the above mentioned issues are life threatening problems for your vehicle. Either way, you should have them checked before it becomes a bigger problem.

It's probably a lifter that has gone bad. Full or empty oil will not make the noise go away. My Bronco II had this issue.

It sounds like lifters, but its too new. Be really sure your husband is right about the oil (check it yourself).
