Answer:
Some of the biggest stones weigh 30/40 tons and the heelstone possibly 50! It was sheer manpower that got them there and put them in position, no aliens....the bones of the people who built & used the monument are still buried all around and their village is 2 miles away at Durrington. To move the stones they obviously used ropes, possibly some kind of sledge and possibly even oxen. They'd have a deep hole prepared and tipped the stone in,using ropes to pull it upright, and then the bottom was packed with loads of smaller stones to keep it in place. To get the lintels on top, they probably built wooden platforms and moved the stone up to the top a couple of feet at a time until they could shift into onto its mortice and tenon joint. The building of Stonehenge and other megaliths was a community effort. to Carlos--they were smart, as smart as we are. Genetically and everyway they are no different to us!Why is there this persistant image of ancient people as grunting monkey men? Although they died young they were strong too, their arms built up bu use of their powerful 6ft longbows!

Nobody knows for sure, there is no record of the event. The only clues we have are the rites and building methods of the ancient Celts.

A lot of hard, physical work by many over a longish time. There have been experiments to see how it was built. Schoolboys poled a bluestone, originally from Wales, along the River Avon many years ago, and attempts have been made to pull the much larger, fairly local sarsens along. A TV programme reconstructed pulling and then erecting a large stone block with about 140 volunteers, tipping the block into position along a small ramp and then putting a smaller one on top using a cradle and pulley. What we forget is that people then had the patience to spend a lot of time and effort to shape a small part of a stone. Instant gratification is a more modern idea.
