Do the geese in North America still fly south for the winter?

When I visited Indiana in March 2008, I saw dozens of geese just staying around a frozen pond, I was confused, as I was always told they would fly south for the winter.

Some geese, if they know they can get plenty of food, don't fly south in the winter. Also, some geese go much further north in the summer, so flying to Indiana is flying south for the winter.
