What is magistrates court like?

What is the difference between a county court and a magistrates court in the uk?

  • And which one of these would deal with a parking notice appeal with a cowboy private parking company, that is not willing to cancel a ticket despite having no evidence? Please advice.

  • Answer:

The magistrates court deals with criminal matters and certain family matters, while the county court, presided over by a judge, deals with civil matters. Your case would be heard either by the magistrates court or by one of the the special traffic and parking appeals courts. http://www.parkingandtrafficappeals.gov.uk/

A magistrates court would deal with individual offenders for less serious offences and then send them to crown court for serious things like murder etc. A county court deals with businesses etc. That's where you'd need to go. In my area the county court is situated within the crown court. A County Court deals with civil matters and a Magistrates' Court deals with mainly criminal matters, so it would be the Magistrates' Court.
