  • Answer:

You will not qualify. You need to take more classes. I f you have already earned a bachelors, I suggest you look for a masters of accounting program as they are geared towards accepting people who want to dive into accounting but have little educational background in it (NOTE: most of them DO have professional background in it though, so they know what the subject is all about!) You'll need to take many deficiency courses in upper level undergrad accounting first, which will likely take at least one year and another year or two for the actual masters program (full time). A prereq to apply to the program normally requires at least a full year of very basic accounting, so if you haven't even taken that (I doubt you did as science majors rarely do), you need to do so before even getting started. Overall, accounting is very sequential so it takes a long time if you have to start from a dead stop. Most majors begin at least by their sophomore year taking accounting coursework and continue taking accounting coursework until the semester they graduate. While there may be some accelerated programs to make up deficiency work, you need to be careful as a lack of basic understanding in accounting principles will haunt you in your later coursework and you're unlikely to do well on the CPA examinations.

You have a long road ahead of you. To be eligible for the CPA exam you'll need a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, work experience in accounting, and at least 150 credit hours of coursework. If you pursue a degree in Accounting the 150 hours won't be a problem. I doubt you'd be able to get your accounting degree in less than 2 years. As someone who started college as a Biology/Chemistry major and later graduated in business, I can tell you that Biology and Accounting have little in common except that they both tend to attract geeks and people who want to make it big in life. Why are you interested in Accounting? Is it because you can't get your career off the ground in Biology? The time spent becoming a CPA might be better spent in a PhD program to advance your science career.
