How can an Irish citizen relocate to the USA?

How easy is it to convert an Amazon India offer to an Amazon USA (preferably Seattle) one?

  • I've been offered a job through my campus placements at Amazon India, but my aim is to work in USA. This is not a slant on India, but I really want to experience the atmosphere over there. I spoke to a HR guy unofficially, and he said that within 18 months or so I should be able to relocate to Seattle. Is that realistic? Also, should I be upfront with my future manager in India about this desire, since me moving would effectively mean leaving his team? PS: I'm a citizen of USA, so I won't have any problems with visa, etc.

  • Answer:

Given your citizen status , It shouldn't be very hard to relocate.  According to the norms here, you should be working for atleast 12 months in a role before you transfer to a different team , but you can always break this rule. 1) If there is counter part team of yours in US and you really like the work in the curent team, discuss with your manager about your idea of moving to US. 2) If you cannot move within your team , don't discuss anything with your manager. Work for a year and you could look for internal opportunities in US.They are plenty of them.

Little much I know, when I was interning at Amazon last summer, I know someone who converted to Amazon Seattle and it had been almost a year to her working at Amazon Hyderabad. One more member from my team wanted to shift to USA and he said he had to work here for a year then he would be able to apply for USA. Process is followed by some technical interviews by some team in USA( not completely sure about this).

There are a lot of people in India in queue for a transfer to Seattle. Visa and all is as such not a problem at Amazon. The team you want to get hired to should take steps to prove your urgency into their team. Otherwise, you are in line with a lot of employees who have applied for a transfer, just for experiencing Seattle. What the HR told you is just a policy. It has decreased from 18 to 12 months. So good luck.

It depends on your manager , but otherwise it should not be an issue given you citizenship status.

You can try but don't expect much specially if the job opening is offered elsewhere and not your preferred location. Those who ask for bilateral transfers are usually regular, tenured employees. It's very unusual even for major companies to transfer employees from one country branch to another unless it's a very critical role which encompasses location. Otherwise, local employees can definitely take over the role in the said country without a need to employ an overseas counterpart. The policy that exists is: 1. The employee should serve atleast for a year in India. 2. The employee should be level 5 , which is one level above what is offered to college fresher. Now promotions in Amazon is not an easy affair at all. In addition to technical abilities some other soft skills (which they call leadership principles) are given equal importance for promotion and it usually takes about 2 years to get promoted from level 4 to level 5. 3. The annual rating should be  atleast 3 out of  a rating of 1 (improvement needed) 2 (meets expectation)  3 (exceeds expectation) 4 (outsandging).
