Tired of the city. wheres a good place to live in CA?

Go north, towards Santa Barbara. Along the coast is beautiful - or a little inland towards Solvang. Or, you could try up the mountain: Running Springs, Big Bear or Arrowhead.

1-2 hours from LA is mainly the high desert. There are almost no trees there. If you want trees, you want Crestline, in the mountains above San Bernardino. Just be aware that anywhere with trees, the wildfires will burn your house down about every 20 years on average.

Palm springs... 2 hours from LA.....

Garden Grove - I stayed there for 2 weeks in April '02 and it was a beautiful area with good restaurants, lots of open space, and some trees.

I have a friend who lives in this city, called Santa Clarita. It is about half an hour from LA and I went to visit once. I just thought it was amazing. There are so many places to go, eat, and hang out. Six Flags, Cinemas, Mountasia, a wonderful mall, and so many historical places. It may not be as small as you are looking for, but I thought it would be a cool place to live in. More and more people and starting to live there, as I saw many new houses when I visited.
