How do I change speaker size in my car?

If a car has a factory amp,,is it ok to change the interior speaker or do i have to change the amp also??

  • Answer:

It depends on the vehicle. Most factory amplifiers can handle an after-market speaker without a problem. The trouble is that many factory amplifiers have built-in equalization and crossovers designed with the factory speakers in mind. That means that you probably won't damage anything, but the new speaker may not play the full sound range, and may not sound as good as the stock speaker. If you're keeping the factory head unit, then you may not be able to bypass the factory amplifier. The head unit may not have enough power to drive a speaker. If you've installed an after-market head unit, you're usually better off bypassing the factory amp when you upgrade the speakers.

Look at the back of the factory installed speaker and note the peak wattage it can handle and it impedance (usually 8 ohms but could be 4). Make sure after market replacement speakers have the same afore mention electronic specs - actually get a speaker with peak wattage that is twice the original factory speaker they will distort less and if you upgrade or bridge two amps your speaker will be able to handle the increase.
