  RN is good for travel, but I called some agencies and the "tax free" money you earn is just that - tax free; however, your salary doesn't budge much above 80k/year. This is a fair amount of money but don't let the "tax free" line get you. I know of one RN who travels to Alaska and works with tribes up there... she rakes in over 6 figures/year. Best bet: do your time for a year or two in a local hospital in med/surg or telemetry, then take that experience on the road with you to places you want to visit like New York or California or Florida or wherever. Travel agencies pay for your room/board, meals, 401k match -- the typical things you'd expect, so that you take home more in pay. The only downside I've heard with travel nurses is that they're pretty much on their own when they enter "foreign" territories (i.e. you're a nurse from the south and you head to New York to do work... they know that since you're an "agency" nurse, you're making a whole lot more per hour than them, so they don't tend to help you out as much. I don't know if this is the real deal but I've heard about it). Generalize your post-school experiences as much as possible (starting with at least 6 months med/surg first), then narrow it down to a specific specialty like telemetry or oncology or med/surg and concentrate on that area and you'll do well. Not all travel agencies offer jobs away from home... you can often find temporary assignments in your larger metropolitan areas near where you live. And most of the time you'll get a "sign-on" bonus if you agree to do the assignment for a specific period of time (i.e. 3 months), then it's on to the next assignment of your choosing. If pursue nursing, earn the BS degree. It opens up a lot more doors for you.
