How do you make plastic straws?

What are some good solutions for small-scale plastic recycling?

  • I am looking for solutions to recycle plastic waste in small towns/communities in developing countries (namely indonesian islands). Waste is created mainly by bottles, straws, plastic films of various width (from product wrappings to plastic sheets) and plastic bags. Ideal solution would be local (on-site transformation in other products or usable raw plastic material), small scale (suited to communities of 200-1000 people), adapted to a wide-range of materials (see waste description), using simple technology (lack of technicians) and has to be economicaly sustainable (at least in the long term, installation costs could be covered by external aid). As I am no expert in the field, I am asking for advices and experiences on the topic. Some of the specific question are: *What technology should be used to actually recycle the plastic? what are advantages and drawbacks of each system if many exists? *Should we think of directly producing items with the plastic or just obtaning raw plastic material(pellets or sorts)? *What is the best way to organise the collection? *What are the main challenges? *How to make it economically sustainable? **THANKS**

Ok, there is no brilliant solution. Plastic bottles and various plastic bits and pieces can be recycled and have a cost value, although transport from the islands would quickly eat into any profit margin. IF some of the islands do not have electricity, consider using some of the plastic bottles filled with water in the roof. They provide excellent light during the day in dark areas. (get back to me if you need info on that). There is a way to use polystyrene to make super-glue but I think there is a patent pending that. Apparently not difficult, you do it with orange oil which can then be another export, so would give you three different projects (recycling, superglue and orange oil). It is also great to use as insulation. Plastic bags can be cleaned and woven as handbags for local markets and the tourists industry, I’ve seen some nice stuff some out of some areas. There is no good way to get rid of the plastic bags, so at least re-using them may produce some income. If you google “plastic bottles as art” you will find a variety of things, however they will mostly be only suitable for the tourist market. I did like the idea of plastic timber mentioned by another writer, however you will find it cost prohibitive unless you get funding for it, which is unlikely from the indonesian government. You would have to look to NGO’s etc. Good luck, let me know if I can help.

Does your local environmental legislature allow for waste to energy re-use of plastics and tires ? Anything with some calorific value can be used as incinerator fuel, which in turn can produce electricity.

I think that your best bet would be plastic lumber.  This would involve three components1. pelletizing extruder to turn the waste plastic into pellets and add the necessary additives to make the pellets useful for plastic lumber2. Molds for the plastic lumber3. Electric kiln for melting the pellets and turning them into lumberThe electric kiln could be powered by solar panels on the island.  The kiln could be operated on sunny days.Unfortunately, it will be very hard to make this process viable on a small island of 1000 people, rather recyclable material will needed to be brought in from other islands to provide sufficient volume. There are many pitfalls here.  For example, who would be responsible for the infrastructure?  Under what terms? Some reasons this could be profitable:Solution to solid plastic waste, a common problem.Cheap energy from solar cells.Cheap labor.

Actually there are so many sources from where plastic waste came from. But We must realize that If we need eco friendly so we must encourage the reuse of Plastics. There are lot of cases where we can adopt it and In a very fancy manner we can recycle it. We're using Plastic paper tray for keeping all our paper stuffs and once it's old then We don't think any instance and throw them like a waste. We can use it as a cup holder or Cup tray.
