The Amur leopard is an endangered cat in the sense that there are very few left but it is not endangered according to the ESA and does not qualify for formal legal protections. In an international, non legal-formal sense, the non-governmental organization, IUCN Red List, listed the Amur leopard as critically endangered in 2004. The list, however, holds no legal requirements but can only serve as a recommendation to sovereign nations.
