Can a Japanese Saw be used to cut hydracal?

Machining: Can a jewelers saw be used to cut 1/4 inch aluminum sheet metal?

  • Answer:

Yes, a jeweler's saw will easily cut aluminum sheet. The 1/4 thickness is going to make it very slow going. You'll want a number 6 blade, which is rated for 6 gauge metal (aprox 1/8 in.). This is the coarsest jewelers blade available, but it will be serviceable for cutting 1/4 in material. I assume that you are thinking of using a jewelers saw because you are trying to achieve a very smooth or intricate cut. In my shop we would use a scroll saw fitted with metal cutting blade to do this job. If needed we'd finish up the details with the jewelers saw.

Other answers

Yes, you should be able to cut it with a jeweler's saw. They're pretty versatile and it is possible to cut steel as well though it means that your blades will wear down more quickly. A 3/0 is a pretty standard size. Otherwise, try a thicker blade like a 3 if you want to cut faster (but get a rougher edge at the same time).
