Who was the best saxophone player that played for Miles?

  • Note, I said FOR Miles, not WITH Miles - which means not including Bird. So..... Cannonball, Trane, Wayne, others????

  • Answer:

"Best" is kind of relative but... I think Trane has had the most influence on the music and musicians.

Coltrane. I named my dog after him ;-)

John Coltrane

My favorite is Coltrane. I think he was the only one who could match Miles in terms of originality and a lasting influence on other musicians, both his contemporaries and those that followed. I liked Cannonball, and I am a huge Wayne Shorter fan, but I think Coltrane is in a different league.

If you are asking which player played the best FOR Miles, IN Mile's band, I would have to say Coltrane. He was very ready and able to do the modal thing. He was the perfect sax for that movement in jazz. When I listen to his solos on Mile's albums, it is just perfect. My favorite sax player that played for Miles, and went on to other things is Sam Rivers. There is something about his playing that just does it for me. He's one of my favorite musicians of any instrument, style, era, etc.

Miles would never hire a bad Saxophone player.

I also vote for Coltrane. His solo's were almost primal, the way he would let out bursts of notes. Very distinctive and always compelling.

Well I am a cannonball man. John Coltrane is the man. So the answer is both. Cannonball was the best at bebop while Trane was the best at his thing. Whatever is was. Spiritual I guess. Both had SOUL. Cannonball had a better sound. Coltrane had better ideas. Put them both together and you get miles. I retract my answer. Miles was the best Saxophone player that played with miles. He played sax better on trumpet than any saxophone player ever. www.summithorn.com
