Im new to the violin ..how do i stop sounding so screechy ?

  • hi ive been playing violin for 2 weeks and when i make a note it sounds screechy,!! more so in the notes that arent open string,. i cant even make twinkle twinkle little star sound ...show more

  • Answer:

Haha, I remember when I started...are you getting tired of holding it up yet?...well..maybe you are putting too much pressure in your fingers...when you press the notes you need to relax...same w/ the bow hand do hand excercises... Sometimes i find that my left hand is like really tense...so just try to play as smooth as posible. And welcome to the violins section!!!

I am 6 years experienced in violin. Taking my diploma soon. There are a few causes to screeching. 1. The violin- If the violin isn't that good, it may turn out screechy at times. 2. The bow- If your bow has little rosin or you are using too much strength to press. Find an ideal weight before pulling the stroke. If you put too much strength, the sound will be screechy. The problem is usually with the weight you put in so try adjusting that.

The main thing to watch in your left hand is to make sure you are pressing down firmly with your left hand. My teacher used to say you should be able to hear the note just by pressing down hard enough on it. Think of it like attacking the fingerboard with your left hand. But probably most of the issue in your right hand. Make sure you are pressing down hard enough but not too hard with the bow. You should be able to glide easily without losing control of the bow. (Make sure you have rosin on!) Keep a uniform pressure on the bow as you draw it across the string. Im glad you're so interested in improving in the violin. Good luck and have fun. The violin is a great instrument!

There are several things you can do to stop screeching:- With your right hand- 1) Find the right balance between making sure that you have good bow contact on the strings and not pressing too hard (experiment and remember the physical feeling of what provides the best result) 2) The bow should move in a straight line parallel to the bridge- keep it equidistant between bridge and fingerboard 3) Keep the bow speed constant With your left hand:- 1) Make sure that the left hand fingers press down FIRMLY on the strings. You should press down so your finger goes down strongly on the fingerboard- if you don't you will squeak. You'll know if you've done it properly as the string will leave a temporary indentation on your finger. 2) Use your finger tips. Bend the fingers and curve them round. Your 1st knuckle joint should be bent Above all, don't panic. It takes quite a long time before you start to sound decent, and screechy sounds are normal when you first start! Good luck!

Well I'm a 3 year violinist. Make sure you do this or have this: Rosin Rosin your bow Make sure you bow isn't touching the bridge (the thing that holds the strings higher) Make sure your bow is straight across the strings and not diagonal. I broke my arm so its pretty hard to think of anything else. Oh and when you rosin your bow I mean really rosin it. Rosin it a lot.
