You will commit job suicide if you ask for time off during the period you mentioned. Retail is especially busy after Christmas and New Years. It wouldn't be expected to slow down until mid to late January. Even considering what you want to do shows your employer that you are not serious about your employment and that you still put YOUR needs first instead of the one who is willing to pay your salary. Even mentioning that you wouldn't mind accepting unpaid time off shows you aren't in the least bit serious about your job dutiees.
