In a job interview: What is the best answer when asked on weakness?

What is the best answer when asked in a job interview. What is your greatest weakness (or weaknesses)?

  • Answer:

It depends on what your weaknesses actually are. When I got asked this during my interview, I said that I was somewhat of a perfectionist and that I can be quiet (my job doesn't deal with people, otherwise I would NOT have said that). It can just be something simple like "I'm not very good at public speaking," and for good measure say how you're trying to improve that weakness. Make sure you read the job description and think of the qualities that would be important for that position, so you don't say you have weaknesses in things that are essential to the job.

I just had an interview and they asked me this ridiculous question, which I modified my answer, just the day before. After I gave her my answer, she said "good, that was an excellent answer." My answer was: I think my greatest weakness is keeping up with software. I am always given new software to learn and use. When I first started at _______, I knew Wordperfect and Lotus. Then when we switched to MS Office, I had to learn all the programs by myself. So, each day, I would set some time aside to play with it and learn different things on it. I added a bit more, but I'm really glad I decided to go with that. I think it shows that yes, I have trouble keeping up with new software and I'm expected to learn it myself, but I try to make time to learn it and my boss is pretty good at allowing me time to learn. It took me a few tries to get the answer I wanted and I like this one. Good luck.

During a behavioral interview, always listen carefully to the question, ask for clarification if necessary, and make sure you answer the question completely. Your interview preparation should include identifying examples of situations from your experiences on your resume where you have demonstrated the behaviors a given company seeks. When answering behavioral questions use the STAR Method and convey specific situations, actions, and outcomes/results. Situation Use specific details about a situation or task. Task Tell what led to the situation or task? Action Taken Discuss what you did and who was involved? Result or outcome Communicate the outcome? Before the interview process, identify two or three of your top selling points and determine how you will convey these points (with demonstrated STAR stories) during the interview. Whenever you can, quantify your results. Numbers illustrate your level of authority and responsibility. For example: "I was a shift supervisor." could be "As Shift Supervisor, I trained and evaluated 4 employees." Be prepared to provide examples of when results didn't turn out as you planned. What did you do then? What did you learn? Your resume will serve as a good guide when answering these questions. Refresh your memory regarding your achievements in the past couple of years. Demonstration of the desired behaviors may be proven in many ways. Use examples from past internships, classes, activities, team involvements, community service and work experience. In this question they'll be looking for a display of Integrity/Honesty, that you were able to identify a weakness and what you did to overcome this weakness.

...The interviewers are trying to catch a glimpse of the unrehearsed candidate in an unguarded moment. There is no way to prepare for these off-the-wall job interview questions so the interviewer is able to observe how the candidate responds and composes his or her thoughts. Some interviewers also ask unusual job interview questions to gain insight into the candidate's thought processes … they want to see how the candidate will think about the unusual job interview question."...

Say that sometimes you work too, get too wrapped up in your rhythm and focus to complete a project, and so you have to remind yourself to stop and smell the roses, too--spend time with your family and friends and catch a baseball game once in awhile.
