Why are people always looking for 'high paying careers'?

  • Is this an American thing? I never remember anyone talking about money in reference to careers at school or university, it was always about doing what you wanted to do.

    Alot of people expect to be able to start out at a new job/career making a 6 figure salary off the bat, simply because they have a degree of some form. Some of them might deserve that kind of pay-rate yet in many cases its arrogance in my opinion. That worked a few years ago, but this is a different day and age. There are so many people out of work that its hard to demand a large salary starting out. Alot of people expecting to start out at a new job on top of the pay scale are only cutting their own throat before they even get in the door.

Americans have bought into the "American Dream" idea which basically says that the more you have, the happier you'll be. Home ownership is the central theme, but if you do the math of paying all the expenses and taxes of homeownerhip over 30 years vs someone who rents for 30 years, you will see that the renter comes ot ahead financially.
