Is it unprofessional to contact a potential employer after the interview?

Should I contact an employer after a job interview when they said they'd call after 24 hours but never do?

Well sending the thank you note was a really good way to follow up. Usually the employer will inform you in the time they specified if you get the job or not. Since he hasn't contacted you, I would assume the posistion has been filled. But you can always call and ask what the status of your application is or if there are any other open positions that you qualify for.

They have probably chosen someone else. It is not very nice that they haven't let you know the outcome though.
