How many hours can I legally work in a day?

24. Many states have laws that state a lunch is required for each 8 hours of work (MD being one, where I live). There really aren't any laws you can use to benefit you here.

There's no limit to the hours you can legally work in a day unless you're in a restricted occupation like airline pilot or truck driver, so you could legally work 24 hours. Not sure why you think the employer can't force you to take a break - they can. And if it's 30 minutes, it can be unpaid, as long as you aren't required to do work during that time. You haven't said anything that they're doing that's illegal.
