What is a paralegal exactly?

What exactly does a paralegal do?

  • And what's the potentiality as a Paralegal in San Francisco?

  • Answer:

The following response applies not only to downtown Los Angeles-based law firms, but to similar firms in downtown San Francisco. The opportunities for a paralegal really depends on the specialty. The most in demand paralegals are those in the litigation field; followed by corporate paralegals who are responsible for maintaining corporate records, articles of incorporation, etc. While the "least" markeable [but the "highest" paid] paralegals are in the field of intellectual property [i.e., patents, trademarks] and immigration law. In conclusion, choose your paralegal courses accordingly, with emphasis on litigation preparation [discovery], docketing/calendaring of incoming pleadings [calendaring] and trial preparation [creating Exhibit tabs, Bajii jury instructions, etc.]. The "pro" side of a litigation paralegal is often "unlimited" overtime which can amount to a high salary range of $65,000 to $75,000 per year, while the "downside," being constantly pressured to meet a monthly client billable quota. And failing to meet that quota, often results in the paralegal's overnight dismissal. It's not a pretty picture. I just want to lay out what really happens in the real world of litigators and their relationship with subordinate paralegals. Good luck!

My girlfriend is a paralegal. I believe they gather all the information & evidence , get it order, for the lawyer to present his case in court.

*Conduct initial client interviews *Research legal issues, find all relevant cases/statutes *Write memo/brief to attorney regarding good law for issue *Write pleadings and briefs *Assist with trial preparation and discovery *Contact between attorney and client *Case tracking *Assist attorney at trial (keep everything organized) What I do, mostly, is legal research and writing briefs/pleadings. I do not conduct initial client interviews but a lot of paralegals do. This is what happens when an attorney takes on a new client...after reviewing their information and determining that the client has standing, I research the legal issue on WestLaw and at the law library. I have to find ALL cases that are related to this case and ALL statutes and codes that apply. Then I write a memo to my attorney summarizing all my research. Then we file a complaint, which I have to draft for the attorney. The defendant files a response and then we file a reply, which I have to draft for the attorney. It is a lot of research and writing. That is most of the position. This link explains it as well... http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos114.htm

If you Google different paralegal associations, you will get excellent information that answers your question, and more. Excellent sites are: www.sfpa.com www.mnparalegals.org www.wspaonline.com the yahoo group "ParalegalGateway" www.abanet.org I've been looking at different programs, and the paralegal program at San Francisco State University seems to be one of the better ABA approved programs.
