Is there a difference between medical technician and a medical technologist?

In medical terms, what is the difference between "technician" and "technologist?"?

  • I'm doing a salary comparison and I'm seeing these terms. Do they mean the same thing, or are they different?

  • Answer:

while I do not know in medical terms I would think that it is the same as it is in common English. The technician knows and practices the technique, the applied knowledge to fix or make something, even if he does not know why it works, he can fix it or build it. The technologist knows the technology behind it, the science. For example, in a car full of geeks and nerds they all know and understand perfectly how an internal combustion engine works. But if the car breaks in the middle of the road they are screwed as they have no idea what to do or how to fix it. They are technologists. The mechanic (technician) fixing the car for them may not understand the physics or thermodynamics, but he'll fix the car as if it were new.

It depends on the field and how specific the description is. Technically (no pun intended), a Technician is someone who physically fixes/programs the machine and the Technologist is the person that runs it. I have a friend who is an MRI Technician. He fixes, programs, and installs MRI machines. In application, the terms are often used interchangeably, even if incorrectly, for a person who runs the images/test.

"Technologist" is usually the official term. But in most cases, these two terms mean the same thing.
