  It looks to me as if you are the "de facto" marketing manager, and that's a good thing. From what you've written it would seem that you're still around precisely because your contribution and capabilities are valuable in the firm. That also tells me that a higher level certification is a formality but one that might increase your chances of a promotion in title and remuneration. It's notable that you've said they expect you to "own" the role in the way your 'predecessor' did - in order to merit promotion - I think they're simply saying: (1) have confidence (2) be assertive in your position (3) take on as much responsibility as you can manage beyond the call of duty (4) impress us that you can be THE marketing manager (5) ask for the job (6) ask for their support and agree to undertake the CIM higher level course of study.
