Fetal Alcohol Syndrome question?

My mother drank ALL the way through my pregnancy, and I don't believe it was light drinking either. Why do some kids get FAS and some don't? It's not fair! I am so angry ...show more

Answer:
Genetics have a lot t do with it. There are certain genes that seem to have to have FAS more commonly because alcohol affects their bodies them more strongly.

I think it depends on how much the woman drank early in her pregnancy when the most damage can be done to her baby. I used to date a guy with mild FAS, he had the look of someone with FAS but was not mentally retarded as those people usually are. His mother drinks TWO CASES of beer per day, every day, and has done so for the past 30+ years. She has 3 children (well, their not children, they're all in their 30s but you know what I mean), and my ex is the only one with FAS.

I know what you mean. Last year when I was working as a waitress, an obviously pregnant woman ordered a double Southern Comfort/Coke. I didn't want to serve her, but my boss threatened to sack me if I said anything to her ???? Can you believe that? This woman had several strong drinks to follow.

FAS is generally associated with heavy or binge drinking during pregnancy. Lots of women have had a few drinks before they even know they're pregnant. As with anything, moderation is the key. I drank the occassional glass of champagne with my first son but never drank more than one in any week. I'm pregnant again and will damn well enjoy the occassional glass of wine if I feel like it. Women drank for years and years without people jumping up and down condemning them. Anyone born in the before the 90's probably had mums who drank and smoked throughout their pregnancies and the rate of FAS is no higher now than it was then. FAS is terrible, and I agree that women should NOT binge drink but the occassional glass is not a bad thing.
