Is there a disabilities rights movement out there?

Disabilities Rights VS Animal Rights -- Animal Rights Group Giving Poor Information About Autism And Blindness?

  • There is an animal rights group that is against the ideal of using dogs as guide dogs for people with blindness and one of the animal rights group co-founders had at least one guide ...show more

  • Answer:

Let me guess, the animal rights group the you are referring to is PETA. If it is PETA, like I think it is, they are a pack of idiots anyway. Their headquarters are located right here in Norfolk, VA, and those fools have been known to throw rocks at people who are doing nothing but fishing. They have also been known to stand out in front of grocery stores dressed up as stalks of celery all because the grocery store had the nerve to sell meat. As far as the guide dogs are concerned "These dogs are breed to work." If the disabled is not allowed to have a guide dog than the police should not be allowed to have any K-9 units to sniff for drugs, the airports should not be allowed to use dogs to sniff for bombs, the farmers should not be allowed to use dogs to round up cattle, nor should search and rescue be allowed to use dogs during a emergency such as the attacks of 911. If I witnessed someone taking a guide dog away from a disabled invdividual, I would show these fools real quick what it is like to also be disabled and needing a guide dog to get around. These clowns should not be allowed to give out any information about a disability. These fruitcakes are known for their radical views and they should be put a stop to, especially if it involves discrimination and denying someone the right to a life simply because they require the use of a guide dog. If I witnessed them giving out bad infomation about the disabled, I would do like I always do "Stand my ground and fight for my rights." If I seen them express any kind of negative aids against the disabled, I will do them very same thing that I do everytime the media and the government express any kind of negative feelings toward the disabled, I will stir up the biggest stink and in the meantime bring up the lack of validity in the US Constitution, especially the part about "All men are created equal." I have made more than my share of very powerul enemies by doing exactly that but I don't give a damn and I will continue to do so until the disabled is treated as an equal in this country. Edit: Those links about PETA does not surprise me at all. A local radio station back in 1998 held a fishing event outside PETA's national office and little to say PETA got extremely violent. I saw first hand just how radical PETA is . You are right PETA would much rather watch people suffer than people and animals benefit from each other.

1. I can find no information about any animal rights groups opposed to service animals. So this is clearly a marginal group. I doubt any animal rights group could successful accomplish this unless the service animal was being mistreated or neglected. PETA has written a fact sheet on service animals and it is not against service animals as a whole - just some of the policies and procedures common to service animal training & service. http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=133 2. Unless an animal is being mistreated, I see no reason for any animal not to be used in a service capacity. 3. I don't think this would happen. I would like to see a link specific to the case where an organization accomplished this. 4.5. 6. PETA is pro-vegan and so jumped onto some data and spun it for its own devices. It has every right to do so. Every organziation that promotes anything does this. But they are also entitled to be condemned for the way they spun the info and they have been. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/MindMoodNews/story?id=5923337 http://blog.peta.org/archives/2008/09/got_autism.php

You should write an official letter to the organisation, and / or an Ombudsman which deals with these sort of complaints. Well they might as well get rid of sleigh pulling husky dogs, sniffer dogs at the airports, companion dogs in nursing homes, sheep or cattle dogs on farms, just to mention a few. I know a (totally) blind woman that has 7 children and a fairly useless husband - she seems to be coping alright. I don't see why one blind person couldn't care for a dog. All guide dogs I have seen in public are in wonderful condition and obviously loved very much by their owners, and the dogs looked pretty happy walking down the street with their master! If they don't think that a blind person can take care of a dog - instead of taking the dogs away, they could actually offer a volunteer service where someone visits the dogs and owners just to give a helping hand and make sure all is ok. Wouldn't that be more constructive??

I don't think that so-called animal rights groups should be able to take guide dogs or any other service dogs away from people on the basis of considering service work to be exploitation. Service dogs choose to work. The ones who don't choose to work "wash out" of the training programs during training. My husband is partnered with a Great Dane balance and mobility service dog, and she LOVES to work. Nothing makes her happier than putting on her harness and vest. She is one of the family, and she is not "on call" any more than any other family member assisting a person with a disability would be. If an animal rights group managed to get her taken from us, we would sue the living daylights out of them. I am adamantly opposed to anyone giving out inaccurate or misleading information about autism or any other disabilities. PWD and their families have enough prejudice and misunderstanding to deal with without anyone adding to the problem for the purpose of advancing their own agenda. I try not to tell other people what to do, and that includes PWD. If some PWD want to campaign against this, great. If not, that's ok, too.
