How many people have disabilities?

How many people with developmental disabilities...?

  • are represent in this people with disability Y!A category. and how would you explain your experience with people misconception of what a developmental disability is.

  • Answer:

Depends on what you mean by developmental disabilities. I have mild spastic cp, low testosterone, adhd, and epilepsy. I have a few others but those four in themselves could each be considered as devolopmental disabilities (depending on the definition of course) because of how they can each limit certain functions physically, mentally, and emotionally. I'm not sure who tried to make the call, but others tried to force me into special ed right from the start but my folks pushed to get me into mainstream classes (and succeeded). Although I saw many specialists during the first several years to keep me up to date with neccessary skills and abilities, and even had a few off/on special tutors to help me (thanks mom and dad again), I still had difficulties all through school (k-12). But I turned out for the better because of the mainstream school. Given the way disabled kids and their learning abilities are viewed and treated by mainstream society, I shudder to think what my reasoning and logic skills would be like had I been put through spec ed instead of regular school (even though reg school could be improved upon). I would be a shell of my current self, (scary thought).

soem people think a developemtnal disability s any disability that begins by age 21.. my condition started when i was 5---i do not consider it a developmental disability the federaldefinitionsays that in addition to starting prior to age 21--it must meet certain other criteria--i have to find teh link http://www.md-council.org/resources/dd_definition.html Federal Definition of Developmental Disabilities According to the Developmental Disabilities Act, section 102(8), "the term 'developmental disability' means a severe, chronic disability of an individual 5 years of age or older that: 1. Is attributable to a mental or physical impairment or combination of mental and physical impairments; 2. Is manifested before the individual attains age 22; 3. Is likely to continue indefinitely; 5. Results in substantial functional limitations in three or more of the following areas of major life activity; (i) Self-care; (ii) Receptive and expressive language; (iii) Learning; (iv) Mobility; (v) Self-direction; (vi) Capacity for independent living; and (vii) Economic self-sufficiency. 5. Reflects the individual's need for a combination and sequence of special, interdisciplinary, or generic services, supports, or other assistance that is of lifelong or extended duration and is individually planned and coordinated, except that such term, when applied to infants and young children means individuals from birth to age 5, inclusive, who have substantial developmental delay or specific congenital or acquired conditions with a high probability of resulting in developmental disabilities if services are not provided." so--thinsg liek Mild Cp, mild autism, dyslexia, even deaf--would ot be developmetnal disabilities.... http://dhs.wisconsin.gov/LTCare/FunctionalScreen/DDdecisiontree.pdf i know a girl with muscular dystophy--that although intellectually gifted would meet the definition of DD since her mobility is severely impaired-a-s would someone with severe CP--even if intelelctually gifted
