Sliding is good because it will get you ready for a shoartboard wan you get advanced. And for size I recommend 8 foot. Cuz 9 foot is to heavy, hard to pebble and wan you see some bigger waves coming it will be hard to get trough the break zone on any long board cuz you can't duck dive. But the smaller your board is the easer it will be to get trough break zone. And I won't recount 7footer rather cuz its to small for a beginner. 8 foot is not to big not to small and hold lots of height. And if money is not a problem for you wham wan you master the longboard bye a fun board it's between a aboard board and a longboard you have to get it first before you get the shoartboard cuz it will get you use to have less resistance and more speed but its not as hard as a shoartboard. A shoartboard even sinks if u don't paddle hard enoug. But if u don't have money to buy a fun board then jest buy a long board after you master the longboard . Butane sure you get some pro lessons cuz doing from longboard to shoartboard is not easy at all. Good luck
