What are some good places for free camping in the Midwest?

What are some good camping places that have water (lakes) in California?

I live in El Monte CA and we are planning on going camping but somewhere where that has water. Last year we went to one that didnt even have a small pond.. Any recomendations? Thanks ...show more

David has some great suggestions. One other place I would like to add that is very close to you is Puddingstone Lake. It is right by the L.A. fair grounds and that water park, Raging waters? The camp ground us up above the lake but it is close.
