What kinds of fruits can guinea pigs eat?

What kinds of fruits and veggies do u feed ur guinea pigs?

  • i dont want long lists copied from websites. just people who acctually own guinea pigs. oh also what things are really bad to feed them. thanks

  • Answer:

My girls get about a cup fresh produce a day. I have tried broccoli, peas, cherry tomato, banana and orange but they did not like these. Their main diet includes some of the following: Parsley, cucumber, tomato (not the cherry kind just normal), celery, bell peppers/capsicum (different names for different places), baby spinach, carrots. Fruits include: Apple, grapes I vary it each day as too much carrot is bad because of calcium levels (we do not want bladder stones), too much cucumber causes diarrhea, too much celery causes diarrhea etc. I do not feed them potatoes, onions, ice-berg lettuce, dairy or meat products (like those yoghurt drops), bulb type products. I take out the seeds of all of the food stuffs (capsicum, apple).

Our guinea pigs love to eat kale, collard greens, romaine lettuce, bell peppers, unpitted cherries, a carrot ( not too many because they're super sugary ), and tomatoes. They also like to eat corn husks and silks, melon peels, their hay, and Oxbow pellets. Please don't add the Vitamin C Supplements to their water, because they disflavor the water and some pigs don't like it. This causes dehydration.

My pigs daily diet (twice a day): -Romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce, endive or red leaf lettuce -handful of parsley or cilantro -1 baby carrot per pig a day -slice of red or green bell pepper Occasional treats: cucumber, kiwi, apple, cherry tomatoes My boys have gas problems with broccoli and spinach, but some pigs do just fine with them. There are lots more veggies that are ok, but this is our normal list. Do not feed potatoes, onions, or too many fruits. Fruits are high in water and sugar. Occasional fruit treats are fine, but not too many

Green leafy veggies are very important for their health! They should each get at LEAST a cup every day. Yellow and Green Peppers are a great source of Vitamin C. Red is, also, but should be given occasionally as it is higher in sugar. That also goes for fruits ~ they're high in sugar and should not be given too often. Many guinea pigs are easily susceptibe to diabetes. Many people have said to give oranges. Sounds healthy, but please only on occasion if you must! Also, try to avoid fruits with pits. Try to stay away from the "cabbage family" veggies, such as Cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower ~ these cause a lot of gas. Lettuces ~ NO iceberg! Butterhead, Romaine, Green leaf, Red leaf, Curly Endive, Cilantro, and Swiss Chard are great! Carrots should only be given (a baby carrot size) once a day ~ these actually don't really have much nutritional value for them. One to two Cherry tomatoes per pig a day is O.K. Summer and winter squashes can be given a couple of times a week. Kale should be used sparingly as it is very high in Calcium and A. Same with Collard greens and spinach, and these are also high in oxalates, so it's best to just avoid these. Stay away from Potatoes, beet greens, Radishes, Bananas (constipating), and Raisins. They should have access to Timothy hay (no alfalfa) at all times, and should have a good guinea pig pellet in their diet, as well. A couple of answers said it was O.K. to feed guinea pigs crackers and toast ~ PLEASE DO NOT FEED THEM THESE THINGS! Their digestive systems are not made for these! No Flour or grain products! Nothing cerealy or with seeds. Hope this helps!!! : o )

My two piggies love apple slices, carrots, romaine lettuce, melon rinds, green peppers, celery (especially the leafy part), kale, spinach, and cucumbers. They don't really like bananas or grapes. I've heard that guinea pigs are not supposed to eat iceberg lettuce, but my pigs have eaten it before with no real problem.

well, the list would be REALLY long if i told you what i do feed my guinea pig, because i feed him just about every kind of fruit and vegitable that he will eat.. iceburg lettuce is the only thing that is really harmful to guinea pigs, also anything with pesticide. Go ahead and spoil your guinea pigs with lots of fruits and veggies, and they'll love you tons :p

I feed my piggy: romaine lettuce apples grapes (very rarely- health risk) melons (very rarely- health risk) cucumber carrots (baby and normal) radishes (very rarely- health risk) SMALL pieces of celery Your piggy NEEDS vitamin C! If you can not provide it, he will get a terrible disease called "scurvy"! Also, don't feed him TOO much vegetables and fruits, as it will cause diarhea. Vegetables and fruits to AVOID: potatoes LARGE pieces of celery TIP: When feeding your guinea pig grapes, cut them in HALF, as this makes them easier to chew. NO! I did not get this from a website! Hope that helped! Good luck with your piggy!
