The ash pollution is a regional pollutant causing a "dimming" in the region. Ash stays in the air for a few weeks then falls out. However, carbon dioxide is a global pollutant because it doesn't go away for 10 years when it finally goes into trees and the ocean. That's enough time for it to travel the world and affect everyone else. In other words, China and India get cooled for a bit while the rest of the world suffers. The only way for ash to stop global warming is for everyone to use coal and wood and put a haze over the entire world, darkening our skies forever. The other major pollutant from coal is sulfur and sulfur dioxide which causes acid rain which in turn kills trees and crops and dissolves limestone cliffs, buildings and Greek statues.
