Yeah, like the other guy said, you've downloaded the Windows version of Messenger. You can't open .EXE files on a Mac. You'll need to download the Mac version of the application. I prefer Adium X for instant messaging. It supports pretty much all IM services, such as AIM, Yahoo! IM, MSN and MySpace, among others. Google search it for more info.
