First off I doubt that your screen size is the problem. Second MSN is most widely used instant messenger if you don't count all the 13 year old girls on AIM. Third download Trillian it will fix your problem.

One of my friends brother has used a thing called pidgin it is pretty much msn in a different format even if your friends use msn pidgin will still allow you to chat with them it seems like an alright alternative
