  Most likely, the thumbnail is just persisting because it is cached on a different server. Basically, when you load a YouTube page, you load the page itself from the YouTube site server and the video from a completely different YouTube video server. This way, the 100,000 people watching video won't slow the other 900,000 people finding videos to watch. The thumbnail should be deleted from the other server within 24 hours I would think. If not, e-mail YouTube and get them on the ball. Be well aware though that nothing on the Internet is truly "deleted." Your video could already be downloaded by a thousand people, or stored on web sites like ftvteen, so in reality the only way to keep anything off the Internet is to never put it there in the first place. Digital information lasts virtually forever.
