• I know how to bit, long rein, back and lunge a horse but in what order do I teach my horse to do these? He knows how to lead and is used to people and sounds.

  This is the job of the breeder. Starting as soon as the foal is 1 week old, you begin by bringing a halter in..play with the foal..rub it on his face his back. It's a game, nothing to fear. put it on him after a few days of this..take it off right away..play some more. Begin the same process with a saddle towel. Play with him. as he is bigger do the same with the rest of the tack. Rub it on him so he smells himself each time you bring it to him. At 4 months.. lean on him. Whenever there is anyone else around..have them lean on him too. The foal will learn the weight of people on his back. nothing new, nothing to fear. at 1 year begin to place a saddle on his back..then take it off. just play..nothing to fear. at 2 years you put it all on him.. let it stay for a while. take it off. after a couple weeks of this..put the girth on the saddle and pull it sort of tight..not all the way. just let him walk around with it. lean on him with the saddle on. Then, in a couple more weeks, tighten the girth and step up into the saddle. He will be surprised..but..nothing new. he has had weight on him since he was a baby...this is nothing to fear. Now you can begin to teach him basics of what he needs to know.
