How much practice a week?

Ive just started ice skating lessons ,I go skating once a week. How do i get good without so much practice?

  • Im 13 and i have 1 lesson a week. I really want to get good can annyone help me?

  • Answer:

Honestly, the only way you can get "good" at ice skating is doing the time to practice ON the ice. Sure there are ways to cross train to help with skating . . . for building up stamina, strength, etc etc. But to get the actual skating techniques down, especially if you are a beginner learning the basics, nothing replaces trying it over and over and OVER again on the ice. If you can only skate once a week, make the most out of that one session. Listen carefully to the instructor and write down notes after your lesson to review during the week. Get all the skating you can get in on your precious ice time . . . focus . . . save any socializing for after you get off the ice. The days you are not skating, visualize the skating elements in your mind. You can do some of the basics on the floor to help with body positions/alignment. Other stuff you can do in addition to skating: stretching, ballet, yoga, pilates, biking, jump rope . . . but remember all that even requires "practice". “It's not necessarily the amount of time you spend at practice that counts; it's what you put into the practice.” Eric Lindros “Practice means to perform, over and over again in the face of all obstacles, some act of vision, of faith, of desire. Practice is a means of inviting the perfection desired.” Martha Graham Best of luck!

I am sorry to say this but the only way to get good at skating is to practice. how else did I get to State Games of America. you should feel lucky you only skate once a week. I skate every day. one thing that may help is to stretch everyday and before you skate. if your muscles are tighte you will skate stiffly. also if you aren't having private lessons you should try to get them. group lessons don't pay as much attention to individuals.if you have questions on thing like stroking spinning or cross overs I may be able to help better. I will try to keep an eye out for your questions so I can answer them. one of the other people that posted for this question talked about rug skates. these do nothing to help you. they only make you slouch when you skate. I hope you found this help full good luck with the lessons.

oh yay! skating is so much fun (i play ice hockey) =) one thing you could do is to wear socks in your kitchen (if you have tile or hardwood floors) and slide around to practice your stride and form, as if you were wearing skates. also, they make this thing (sorry, but i'm no sure what its called, but im sure u could find it if you looked on usahockey.com or something) and its kinda like white plastic or something, and you wear shoes on it and slide back and forth to improve your stride also. its supposed to work pretty well =) good luck and have fun!! <33
