What are some amazing/unique places to see in and around Switzerland?

  • I will be coming to Lausanne for a couple of months & might just have the weekends free. I have already seen the usual tourist destinations in & around Switzerland. What are some of the unusual/ unique or amazing places to see in Switzerland and in other Schengen countries around Switzerland. Also, is it possible to visit Sweden, Denmark, etc during the weekend?

    Alp Flix http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alp_Flix Alp Flix used to be marshlands, but then around 1500 some people moved up there, cut the high grass and started using the high alp (around 2’000 meters above sea level) as meadow and grazing grounds for their animals. Apparently around 200 people lived on Alp Flix around that time. Nowadays, it’s just four farmers. There’s one (or now maybe two) small hotels with a few beds available up there. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alp_Flix It’s a beautiful and in some aspects for Switzerland unique landscape with a huge biodiversity. Aside from that, it’s just an incredibly beautiful spot on earth. I’ve been lucky enough to take part in a weeklong camp up there a few years ago. If you have the chance to be in Switzerland for a couple of months, don't waste it by wishing you were somewhere else! Enjoy the beauty where you are. One of my most impressive weekends as a young man was to take the train and bus to La Forclaz (above Aigle), hike up and camp overnight in the mountains (I was glad to have a tent, sleeping bag and 'space blanket' although it was summer time!) You stand a good chance of seeing chamoix or mountain goats. Next day I walked over to the Lac de Bretaye, on to Villars and back by public transport. Nothing extraordinary, but you get a feel for the real Switzerland.
