How to keep calm in piano exams?

    Hi! My piano teacher (in school) would make me really nervous by coming up behind me and watching, and when I made a mistake or slowed he'd be like "OH! What was THAT?!" in a joking, but seriously annoying way. He also sang along :/ but overtime, I just learned that I had to remind myself I knew the piece perfectly, and my fingers would work. In practice, I also would occasionally pretend, okay, now I'm doing it for a grade. I would actually get nervous, which was good practice, and I could say that I would play as well under pressure.

It goes away with experience :P Play at more recitals and live performances and it'll be a lot easier to play at an exam. Just consider it another performance. That definitely helped me on my exams. Good luck and hope this helps! :)

I know, it's really hard to keep calm. But don't be put off, the examiners will have seen loads of people be a little nervous. I was too, but the trick is to keep calm, and breathe. It doesn't hurt to ask whether you can start again too. Just relax, keep calm, and breathe. Tell yourself that you can do it, and try and imagine it's just you in the room.

While you can't beat nerves entirely(I don't think anyone can), there are a few tricks. Knowing the examiner is just doing his job, being payed no matter what you do, and doesn't really care how well you play or not - I'm sure no one like to see a student mess up - can help. Another thing I've been told is that if you take a deep breath and wait ten seconds it is not physically possible for your body to maintain the nervous feeling. It might be something like letting it out slowly too.
